Ask anyone in the industry about the future of fitness and you’ll get an answer about online coaching.
They’ll tell you about how the future is online. About how online coaching will simplify the entire training process. About how online coaching will get great results—even better than in-person. And they’ll tell you how online coaching is poised to eventually replace the traditional training model.
That’s what they’ll tell you. But not me.
Because I wholeheartedly disagree. Online coaching isn’t the future of fitness.
It’s not the future because it’s already happening. Online coaching programs are already simplifying the training process, getting people better results than in-person, and it’s already started replacing the traditional training model.
Online coaching isn’t the future, it’s the here and now.
And it presents a uniquely awesome opportunity for you (and anybody else that’s got fitness goals). But the window of that opportunity is closing. Quickly.
Wait too long and you’ll completely miss it.
Online Coaching and the State of the Fitness Union
Right now, online fitness coaching is mainstream. A few years ago, it wasn’t. A few years before that, it wasn’t much more than a novel idea.
But times have changed.
Online coaching is happening. In a big way. Coaches everywhere are helping more and more people crush their fitness goals online, which is awesome.
And it will continue to be awesome—until it isn’t.
The moment the market gets saturated is the moment online coaching becomes less awesome. It’s also the moment your window of opportunity slams shut. Forever.
It’s all basic supply and demand.
The increasing popularity and awareness of online coaching is leading to higher demand. Simply put, more people are interested in online coaching today than five years ago. There’s more demand.
Supply must rise to meet the demand. And that’s the problem.
It Happened In-Person, It’ll Happen with Online Coaching Too
The bar of entry for the fitness industry is extremely low. Certifications exist, but they’re not very hard for anyone to pass with some concerted effort. What’s more, most don’t even teach you how to really train or coach.
There are a lot bad trainers.
Increasing supply to meet higher demand just creates more.
We’ve seen it happen with in-person training over the last 15–20 years. Health and fitness have become higher priorities than ever.
Subway got wildly popular by offering “healthy” lunch options, everybody and their dog started going for runs (literally), and gym memberships have skyrocketed.
As more people focused on health and fitness, more people looked to trainers and coaches. Before long, freshly certified trainers started coming out of the woodwork to meet the demands of the market.
Then it happened…
Saturation.
Now the in-person training industry is completely saturated and we’ve got so many trainers that everybody suffers:
– The level of service declines and you get worse results.
– Trainers have to cut into their profits just to keep up with the low-ball competition.
– Great coaches lose business simply by charging what they’re worth.
– Under-qualified “experts” and mediocre results hurt the industry as a whole.
In the end, most people are paying money for results they’re not getting. And that’s exactly what’ll end up happening with online coaching.
Avoiding the Inevitable Decline of Online Coaching
Eventually, online coaching programs will follow the same pattern. It’s already started. Just take a look at Instagram—more and more people offer online coaching with little more qualification than looking good in a sleeveless shirt or sports bra.
Because #fitspo.
Things are only going to get worse as saturation sets in. It’ll only be harder to find a good coach. It’ll only be harder to get great results.
But there’s good news: You can avoid wasting time and money on mediocre results.
It’s simple too. The key is taking action sooner rather than later (translation: now). You’re in complete control of whether or not you sit back and watch the decline of online coaching or get in on the action.
Join the Golden Age of Online Coaching Before It’s Too Late
Listen, I can’t pretend to know much about economics. I can’t tell you exactly when online coaching is going to shift into saturation. And I can’t pretend to know what’s going to be the next big opportunity for you to get great results.
